Supermassive Black Hole

A simulation of what the supermassive black hole at the center of our Galaxy might look like if you were gazing down at the hot, compressed gas swirling around its event horizon. The cyan color indicates the emission of radio waves oscillating sideways (horizontal polarization), whereas red indicates waves oscillating vertically. The bright, thin ring is due to light that has circled the black hole once before leaving its environment. The overall size of the bright emitting region is comparable to the radius of earth's orbit about the sun.
